7W Questions

Not the first account determines the result, but systematic examination of who, what, where, when, why, how, and with what means. Rooted in classical rhetoric and refined through Lasswell’s communications model, it yields complete project charters, incident reconstructions, and launch plans with fewer factual omissions.

Based on: Antike Rhetorik (Quintilian)

What is it?

The 7W Questions framework is one of the most durable and time-tested instruments of rational inquiry, formulated by the Hellenistic rhetorician Hermagoras of Temnos and codified by Cicero as the Septem Circumstantiae (the seven circumstances). It constitutes the epistemic bedrock of investigative journalism, criminal jurisprudence, aviation safety investigations, and enterprise systems engineering. When knowledge workers characterize an operational crisis or strategic requirement, they instinctively communicate only the subset of data aligned with their immediate cognitive framing. The 7W framework systematically eliminates selective attention: it forces an exhaustive audit across seven mutually orthogonal coordinates (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How, and Wherewithal).

The Methodological Mechanism

The framework probes seven distinct operational dimensions:

1. Who? (Agents & Sovereignty): Who initiated the action? Who was impacted? Who holds primary fiduciary accountability? Who covertly benefits from the current equilibrium?

2. What? (Substance & Anomaly): What concrete event transpired? What physical or digital artifacts were modified? What is the quantified delta from baseline?

3. Where? (Topology & Locus): Where did the phenomenon manifest? Across which network node, geographic plant, or jurisdictional boundary? Where did it noticeably fail to occur?

4. When? (Temporality & Phase): At what precise timestamp? At which stage of the system lifecycle? What was the duration, cadence, and latency?

5. Why? (Causal Teleology): What systemic necessity or tactical motivation prompted the event? What was the underlying incentive vector?

6. How? (Mechanics & Modality): What precise step-by-step kinetic or algorithmic sequence mediated the outcome?

7. Wherewithal? (Instruments & Capital): What tooling, compute, financial capital, or legal authorities were consumed to execute the action?

The Algorithmic Reactor Advantage

In conventional corporate briefs, teams answer the 7W superficially, creating blind spots that later derail major capital deployments. The Brainstorm Reactor enforces diagnostic completeness:

  • Exhaustive Matrix Verification: Automatically audits briefings for missing dimensions, flagging ambiguities before engineering kickoff.
  • Epistemic Classification: Rigorously demarcates verified empirical data points from speculative hearsay across all seven categories.
  • Executive Synthesis Briefing: Synthesizes disparate qualitative inputs into an unassailable, structured operational ledger.

Boundary Limits & Trade-offs

An information-gathering, context-structuring, and diagnostic methodology. It does not synthesize disruptive innovations on its own; rather, it guarantees the baseline problem definition is pristine.

Strategic Application Fields

High-leverage deployment in engineering project charter creation, regulatory compliance filings, forensic post-mortems, litigation risk analysis, and GTM playbooks.
